Weight Loss Success Story Newton Abbot: How Ian Lost 15kg in Six Months

Ian walked through our doors about six months ago. He was 41, he was carrying more weight than he wanted to, and — in his own words — he was in quite a low place. There’d been a lot going on in his life. He wasn’t chasing a six-pack or a personal best. He just needed something to pull him up. Not just physically. Mentally too.

Six months later he’s nearly 50 sessions in and 15 kilos lighter. But if you ask him what actually changed, the weight isn’t the first thing he mentions.

That’s why I wanted to write this one up. Because Ian’s weight loss success story in Newton Abbot isn’t really a weight loss story. It’s a story about what happens when someone finally has somewhere to turn up to.

The bit nobody puts on a before-and-after photo

Here’s what Ian said when I asked him what the biggest change had been:

“Definitely from a mental point of view, it’s picked me up no end.”

Not the scales. Not the trouser size. His head.

I hear this constantly and it still doesn’t get talked about enough. People come to us because they want to lose weight, and they leave six months later talking about how they sleep better, how they’re less snappy with their kids, how they’ve got mates again. The physical stuff is real and it matters — but it’s often the side effect, not the main event.

For Ian, a big part of that was simply meeting new people. Turning up somewhere three or four times a week where people know your name and notice when you’re missing does something that no home workout app can replicate. You’re not a login. You’re Ian.

What 15 kilos actually gets you

This is the part I think people underestimate. When you’re carrying extra weight, the cost isn’t abstract — it’s the stuff you quietly stop doing.

Ian’s list of what came back:

  • Moving around easier day to day
  • Running around with his kids properly
  • Being more active on the tennis court
  • Getting more out of every session in the gym

None of those are gym goals. They’re life goals. The gym is just where he did the work that made them possible again.

Ian’s six months at a glance:

  • Age: 41
  • Time training with us: 6 months
  • Sessions completed: nearly 50
  • Weight lost: approximately 15kg
  • Biggest reported change: mental health and energy
  • Key motivator: accountability through the Level Method

Why the Level Method kept him going

Ian brought this up without me prompting him, which tells you something.

“I love the accountability. So looking at the Level Method and how there’s that belt-type system of looking through all your different types of movements and just goals to achieve.”

If you’ve not come across it, the Level Method is the assessment system we use across the gym. Think martial arts belts, but for movement. It maps out where you are across strength, engine, mobility and skill, and it shows you — clearly, visually — what the next level up looks like.

The reason it works isn’t complicated. Most people don’t quit training because it’s too hard. They quit because they can’t tell whether it’s working. Two months in, the scale’s being moody, they feel roughly the same, and there’s no evidence anything’s changed. So they stop.

The Level Method removes that guesswork. You always know where you are and you always know what you’re chasing next. As Ian put it, you’ve always got something to keep yourself accountable.

That’s also why every member has a Customer Success Coach. Someone whose actual job is to check in, spot when you’ve gone quiet, and get you back on track before a missed week turns into a missed month. Life happens — holidays, illness, work going mad. That’s what home workout sessions and remote programming are for. The plan bends. It doesn’t break.

“What have you got to lose?”

I asked Ian what he’d say to someone sat at home thinking about it but not doing anything about it.

His answer was blunt: “What have we got to lose? You can either just join, or come and speak to one of the guys first.”

Then he added the bit I think actually matters:

“All the coaches are really friendly. Whoever you end up meeting, they’ll just talk you through everything and give you a plan, something to aim for and something to strive for. If you’ve got any questions, they’re all there to help.”

That’s the whole thing, really. The barrier for most people isn’t fitness. It’s the fear of walking into a room where everyone knows what they’re doing and you don’t. So you put it off. Another Monday, another January.

Ian didn’t have a plan when he came in. He had a rough idea that something needed to change. We took it from there.

Where this leaves you

If you’re reading this and some of Ian’s story sounds familiar — the low patch, the stuff piling up, the sense that you’ve stopped doing things you used to enjoy — I’d say this: you don’t need to be ready. You just need to start.

Six months is not a long time. It’s two seasons. It’s the gap between now and Christmas. Ian used his to drop 15 kilos, get his head straight and get back on the tennis court with his kids.

Come and have a chat with us at our facility in Newton Abbot. No pressure, no sales pitch, no assessment you need to pass first. Just a conversation about where you’re at and what a realistic plan looks like for you.
