Your Questions Answered: 5 Things People Ask Before Joining Primal Mvmnt in Newton Abbot (Part 1)

If you’ve been thinking about joining a gym but you’re not quite sure if it’s right for you — you’re not alone.

Every week, people get in touch with us at Primal Mvmnt Fitness & Nutrition with questions before they take that first step. And honestly, we love it. Questions mean you’re thinking seriously about your health and you want to make a smart decision rather than just showing up and hoping for the best.

So we thought we’d answer the five questions we hear most often, properly — not just the short version on the website, but the real, honest answers.

1. Is Primal Mvmnt suitable for beginners or people who feel nervous about joining a gym?

Yes. And we mean that genuinely, not just as a box-ticking answer.

Gym anxiety is real. Walking into a space where you feel like everyone else knows what they’re doing and you don’t — that’s an uncomfortable place to be. We hear this from almost everyone who comes through our door for the first time, even people who’ve trained before.

Primal Mvmnt is a boutique gym in Newton Abbot, which means it’s a very different environment from a big commercial gym. There are no rows of machines you don’t know how to use, no one staring at you in the mirror, and no vibe of having to prove yourself before you’ve even started.

When you come in for a free Intro, you’re not thrown into a class or a session. You sit down with a coach, talk through where you are, what your concerns are and what you’re hoping to achieve. From there, we guide you through a Kickstart process — a proper introduction to training with us, step by step, at your pace.

If you’ve been out of exercise for years, if you’ve never really trained properly before, or if the idea of a gym makes your stomach drop — this is built for you.

2. What is the best way to get started at Primal Mvmnt in Newton Abbot?

Book a free Intro. That’s it. That’s the answer.

We know it can feel like a big step, but the free Intro isn’t a sales pitch dressed up as something helpful. It’s a proper conversation — usually around 30 minutes — where we talk about your goals, your training history (or lack of it), your schedule, your lifestyle, and anything that’s been holding you back.

By the end of it, you’ll have a clear idea of which option suits you best, what getting started actually looks like, and what realistic progress could look like for you. You won’t feel pressured, and you won’t leave with homework you weren’t expecting.

If you’re based in Newton Abbot, Torquay, Teignmouth, Kingsteignton, Chudleigh or anywhere in the surrounding area, it’s worth coming in. We’re just off the A380 on Milber Trading Estate, easy to get to and there’s free parking on site.

The free Intro is the best first move you can make — not because we said so, but because it removes all the guesswork before you commit to anything.

3. How often should I train each week to see results?

For most people, two to three coached sessions per week is the sweet spot.

We’re not going to tell you that you need to be in here six days a week to see results. That’s not true, and it’s not sustainable for most busy adults. What matters far more than training volume is training consistency — showing up regularly, week after week, and pairing that with decent habits outside the gym.

Two sessions a week, done consistently over months, will deliver better results than five sessions a week for three weeks followed by burning out and stopping. We see this play out all the time.

What we do is help you find the realistic number for your life right now — not the number that looks impressive, but the number that actually fits around your work, your family and your energy levels. Then we build from there.

We also look at what’s happening outside training: how you’re sleeping, how you’re eating, how much you’re moving generally. The training sessions are important. But they’re only part of the picture.

4. What is the difference between Personal Training, Semi-Private Personal Training and Small Group PT?

Great question — and the honest answer is that the right option depends on you, not just on what sounds best.

Here’s how we break it down:

Personal Training (1:1) is exactly what it says. You and a coach, every session. Your programme is built entirely around you, the coaching is 100% focused on you, and your sessions happen at a time that works for your schedule. It’s the highest level of individual support and is ideal if you want the fastest progress, if you have specific goals or physical considerations, or if you simply prefer that one-to-one dynamic.

Semi-Private Personal Training sits in the middle. You train in a very small group — typically two to three people (max 3) — but you still receive a high level of individual coaching attention. You get the personalisation of PT with the shared energy and lower price point of a group setting. For a lot of people, this is the perfect balance.

Small Group PT is our coached group training programme. Sessions are structured and led by a coach, everyone works through the same training, and the focus is on building strength and fitness in a fun, supportive environment. The group setting brings its own motivation, and many of our members say the community element is one of the things they value most.

During your free Intro, we’ll go through all three with you and give you an honest recommendation based on your goals, your experience, your budget and how you tend to respond to different training environments.

5. Can I train at Primal Mvmnt if I have an injury, a bad back or haven’t exercised for years?

Yes — and you’re probably in better company than you think.

The majority of people who start with us aren’t coming from a place of peak fitness. Many are returning to exercise after months or years away. Many have some kind of ache, pain or concern about what they can and can’t do. A bad back, dodgy knees, a shoulder that’s been playing up — these are incredibly common, particularly in adults over 35.

Our job isn’t to push you through sessions regardless of what’s going on. It’s to understand your starting point properly and coach you in a way that’s appropriate for where you are right now. That might mean modifying certain movements, building foundational strength before loading things up, or simply taking a more gradual approach in the early weeks.

That said, we’re coaches — not physios. If your injury needs specialist medical input, we’ll be straight with you about that and point you in the right direction. Working alongside a physio or GP alongside your training is sometimes the smartest approach, and we’ll always support that.

The key thing is: don’t let an old injury or a long gap from exercise be the reason you don’t start. Come and have a conversation with us first. We’ll tell you honestly whether we can help and how.
